It was a dismal day last Saturday, as friends and family of 31-year old Deborah Ukamaka Johnson (Nee Odoemelam) paid their last respect at her funeral in Lagos.
According to reports, she was allegedly overwhelmed to death by her husband in Lagos, years when she told a devotee that violence was a sort of trial and she or he had conquered it.
The deceased got married to her idol, Akwa-Ibom State-born Godspower Johnson Itohowo in December 2014 whereas still in class against the advise of her folks and siblings. Reports from her siblings have it that the wedding had been abusive right from the very begin. The primary sign that the wedding was a disaster, consistent with her elder sister, Chinenye Adogah, was once the deceased was asked to withdraw from practice at five hundred Level.
According to her immediate elder sister, Chinonso Pope, she had to travel and take the late Johnson to her house for the asking from involved neighbours who were disturbed by the number of beating she was receiving from her husband, Godspower Johnson.
She recalled that Johnson had been abusing the deceased for long. There was a time, she said, once their neighbour referred to as her to come back and take her sister home, as a result of her husband had thrown her out of the house, naked.
“On the tenth of March, he threw her things out and she had ran to my place. After 2 days of staying at my place, her husband started calling her to come home.” She refused till her in-laws joined in the plea – albeit, against her sister’s counsel.
However, on the twenty first of March, 2019, she was overwhelmed until she couldn’t move her limbs once more just because she turned down his request for sex. She was later hurried to LASUTH, wherever she was stable so transferred to the National orthopedic Hospital, Igbobi, wherever it absolutely was discovered that she had a broken spine and multiple fractures on her neck.
Deborah gave up the ghost some days later and also the husband has since been charged to court for murder and is being remanded in jail.
Lagos Police PRO, Bala Elkana confirmed report of the case saying, “We have dispensed our investigation on the matter and that we have sent it to the Director of Public Prosecution for legal recommendation. Once the recommendation is out, we’ll take the following line of action”
He additionally aforesaid, “The suspect has been charged to court for murder and is being remanded in jail.”.
